Idaho: Types of Mold

While common indoor mold in Idaho isn’t as life-threatening as toxic mold, it can still cause bothersome health problems especially in those with compromised immune systems. The four most common types of Idaho indoor mold include alternaria, mucor, penicillium, and aspergillius.

Alternaria is a contaminant found both nationwide and worldwide. A type of allergenic mold, atlernaria can be found on soil and plants. This type of mold can cause hay fever, asthmatic reactions and other allergies.

Mucor is found in soil, animal droppings and household dust. Mucor can cause lung infections in those who have weakened immune systems.

Penicillium can also be found in soil and dust, along with food products. For example, the type of mold that forms on decaying bread is penicillium. This type of mold can cause allergies in people.

Aspergillius can also cause allergies, hay fever, lung infections and asthmatic reactions. In healthy people, aspergillius should have little effect, though it can be fatal for those who have weakened immune systems.
