Idaho: Brain Injury Types
A hematoma forms when a traumatic head injury causes blood to accumulate in the brain or in between the brain and skull. There are three types of hematomas including the epidural, subdural and intercerebral. The epidural hematoma forms between the skull and outer layer of brain tissue, while the subdural hematoma occurs between the outer and middle layer. Intercerebral hematomas are blood clots that form within the brain.
Hematomas are caused by head trauma or aneurysms. Old age, youth, long term alcohol use and use of blood thinners can put someone at risk for hematomas. Symptoms of hematomas include:
- Drowsiness
- Persistent headache
- Memory changes
- Confusion
- Paralysis
- Speech impairment
