Idaho: Brain Injury Types

Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a traumatic brain injury that occurs after a violent form of child abuse, when a parent, guardian or babysitter shakes a child out of frustration. The infant cannot support his head fully and the shaking causes the brain to collide against the walls of the skull. This can cause contusion, swelling, bleeding and pressure in the brain as well as damage to the neck, spine and eyes. Shaken baby syndrome most often occurs in children under two years but can be seen in children as old as five.

Symptoms of this brain injury include:

Difficulty or inability to breathe
Pale or bluish skin
Seizures
Change in eating patterns
Loss of consciousness
Vomiting
Lethargy
Rigidity

Many children who survive shaken baby syndrome in Idaho can have mild to severe handicaps, such as learning disorders, blindness, retardation, paralysis and behavioral problems.
